The Student Association for Campus Activities is an organization committed to creating unique experiences for Bobcats right here in the LBJ Student Center. For over 5 years, SACA has been hosting events like WTFloat, Tunes @ Noon, and Gaillardia Fest, which have allowed Texas State students to make memories that last a lifetime. Bobcats might not know how much time, dedication, and hard work it takes to make these events run smoothly, and the strong connections that are formed between members to make this team strong.

Brianna Mascorro is the president of SACA and oversees the main operations behind all of the events we know and love. This role comes with a lot of responsibilities, including being the liaison for the organization and leading dozens of students to orchestrate detailed events with a quick turnaround. When Brianna was a sophomore, she attended the talent show and met Destiny McCalla, the pride and traditions coordinator who would later show her the ropes about SACA - an interaction that would change the course of her college experience forever.

“Going to the homecoming talent show was my first time ever going to homecoming, and I loved it,” Brianna said. “I remember Destiny introducing herself and giving the SACA pitch. I remember constantly being interested in organizing events like this, and from then on I was kind of hooked.”

After her interest was sparked, she joined SACA and was thrown into the world of event coordination. Initially Brianna felt doubtful of her capabilities and struggled to figure out what kind of leader she was. The structure of the organization was something she had never experienced before, and with the help of her advisers and executive board she was able to achieve more than she ever imagined.

“I worked that upcoming fall and when that term ended, I felt like my service wasn’t done, I didn’t want to end there,” Brianna said. “I ended up pushing myself to apply for president, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. SACA really prepared me for the real world, and I feel like my confidence has grown so much because I’ve truly found myself.”

Not only did Brianna experience what it was like to run these events that fostered new relationships, but she also began to build those connections with other students herself. This was the catalyst that changed how she viewed her role at Texas State.

“LBJSC continuously makes connections for Texas State students by supporting campus culture,” Brianna said. “They give us a space to host our events and create an environment where we can make people feel at home. Building relationships with our students is the most rewarding part for me.”

Similarly, to Brianna, Destiny found a lot of joy in creating meaningful memories with fellow Bobcats through SACA. After four years in the program, the Texas State alum has gained clarity and confidence in herself that she believes wouldn’t have been possible without being involved in the organization.

“I saw a poster in my resident hall when I was a freshman about a silent disco at the [LBJ] mall,” Destiny said. “At first I was really bummed out because I didn’t have a car and I thought it was at the outlet mall so I couldn’t go. That night some people on my floor had come back from the event saying how much fun they had at LBJSC. I felt like I missed out, so I approached SACA and saw there was a way to not only enjoy the event but see what goes on behind the scenes.”

Destiny was immediately pulled in, and after serving her time as a member she became the pride and traditions coordinator. Before taking on this leadership position she described herself as a shy, inverted person, and now as a graduate she feels more confident in her social skills than ever. This role was a catalyst for a lot of change in her life, and it even changed the course of her studies here at Texas State.

“I’ve learned more about myself, my interests, and strengths,” Destiny said. “Because of SACA, I realized that I really do love organizing events and decided to do PR as my future career. They always say if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life, and I truly loved my role and saw a career for myself in it.”

SACA not only allowed Destiny to solidify her career in event planning but gave her a lot of rewarding experiences along the way.

“I threw this karaoke event in the amphitheater, and not very many people were participating at first,” Destiny said. “After a couple of hours, the event got going and one girl came up and sang. Afterwards, she came up to me thanking me for throwing the event and said that she had a great time because she was going through a hard time at school. It was really eye-opening for me because I realized that even if it was just one person, it’s important to be there to provide these experiences that change people’s lives.”

Being able to create events that helped students feel more comfortable at Texas State made Destiny feel rewarded in ways she hadn’t before. SACA provided her with the skills to manage, coordinate, and execute complex events that left a lasting impact on every Bobcat who attended. After seeing firsthand how beneficial getting involved was to her own college experience, she encourages other students to do the same.

“Just come to the student center and get involved, even if it’s just for a little bit,” Destiny said. “When I was in high school, I wasn’t involved in anything and now I’m involved in everything. We all chose Texas State for a reason, and when you get involved at LBJSC it makes you feel like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself - it’s so worth it.”
