5 Ways to Be Ready for Your First Fall at Texas State

Get Ready For the Fall Semester!

It’s more important than ever to make sure you’re ready for this upcoming fall semester as it’s guaranteed to look different than before. Having first day jitters is normal for everyone regardless of your classification, and preparation is a great way to combat any stress you’re feeling about this new chapter. Lucky for you, LBJSC has compiled a list of ways you can set yourself up for success this summer and combat any adversity that is thrown your way!

Constantly Check Your Email for New Info

It’s vital that you’re constantly aware of any new information or changes regarding move-in day, your classes, and financial aid, especially if you’re a first-year student. Checking your email will become a daily occurrence for you, so get into the habit now so you’ll never miss out on anything important. Not only is checking your inbox imperative to your success but thoroughly reading your messages! Skimming through emails can result in missing a key piece of information that could waste your time or money in the future. Keep an eye out for messages from your Professor about changes in how your classes will operate and emails from Texas State’s administration on new policies to keep students safe and healthy.

If you’ve been slacking on your emails this summer, don’t worry! Texas State's Roadmap is dedicated to important announcements and information that you can review before the semester begins. We recommend taking the time to review this in-depth so you can be up to date on all things Texas State!

Get Stocked Up On COVID-19 Essentials

Before moving in it’s a good idea to pick up some supplies that will help you stop the spread of COVID-19 and stay safe throughout the fall semester. Stores in San Marcos will most likely be running low once students return to campus, so bring a solid COVID-19 stash before you arrive. This kit should include hand sanitizer, soap, disinfecting products, and a couple of different masks to switch out throughout the week. Having these essentials handy during move-in will be a lifesaver, and will help you feel safer once you’ve settled in. Protecting yourself and others during this time is important and keeping a good inventory of products is one of the best ways to do that.

 Get Familiar with Canvas

Texas State is officially moving over to Canvas, and for many students, this is a completely new platform to get adjusted to. Canvas will essentially be the hub for all things academic for you, so it’s important to know how to submit an assignment, access the grade book, and find your syllabi. Take some time before your classes begin to understand the ins and outs of your course sites and email your professor if you have any questions. This is especially important if your class has become online or hybrid since registration. Being knowledgeable about Canvas will make you feel infinitely more confident about your online performance, especially if online learning isn’t really your style.

If you want to know more but don’t really know where to start, the IT Assistance Center is an excellent resource for all things Canvas! It’s really easy to navigate and includes step-by-step guides to help you through this learning process. Check it out today!

Make Your Room an Oasis

It’s expected that we all will be spending more time inside this upcoming semester, so making sure your room is an oasis is key! Your mental health and productivity are oftentimes a product of your environment, so figure out how you want your new space to make you feel. Your bedroom might function as a study space or classroom during many points throughout this semester, so fill it with things that you like! Splurge on a good set of sheets and incorporate some decor that stimulates you. Find ways to implement a calmer vibe for when it’s time to focus with essential oils, candles, or soft lighting. There are many ways to make your new room feel like home that don’t have to break the bank.

If you’re unsure what you’re allowed to have on campus, take a look at the Department of Housing and Residential Life’s. This is a one-stop-shop for all the do’s and don’ts on appliances you can bring, wall decorations, and COVID regulations. Get started on your dream room today!

 Stay Optimistic!

Although this semester will look a little different than we imagined, there are still things we can celebrate! Joining the Bobcat family is a rewarding experience and we will all get through this semester together. Through positivity and companionship, this could be one of the most influential semesters in your college experience. It’s really important to keep your mental health in check and stay optimistic no matter what is thrown your way. Keeping a gratitude journal, calling friends and family, and practicing self-care are just a few ways you can keep your spirits up! Remember, you are never alone when you are a Bobcat.
